Reviewed by Cara PutmanFrom the first line of chapter one, I was swept into the story and setting.Bayou Justice is the debut release from talented author Robin Caroll and avoids so many of the mistakes common to first efforts. From the first line of chapter one, I was swept into the story and setting. CoCo LeBlanc just wants to protect the alligators that line the Louisiana Bayou outside her home, but finds her wrestling another body away from a gator. Luc Trahan, the grandson of the man she finds, wants to find justice but is reluctant to pursue it with his ex-fiancee. Together they must fight to find the killer before the killer strikes again. This book is so tightly woven into the Louisiana Bayou that it could not take place anywhere else. It would be impossible to have the same story take place in Washington DC or Indiana. And the setting propels the story forward by providing a rich array of subplots. Coco and Luc are well-developed characters with enough history between them to keep the romance and suspense interesting. Add in the fight between voodoo and Christianity, and there's enough conflict to populate several books. I enjoyed this book, and think you will too if you are looking for a book balanced between romance and suspense. |

Reviewed by Lacy J. WilliamsCaroll has hit one out of the park with her debut novel.Coco LeBlanc has a lot on her plate. Her sister and grandmother refuse to listen to her about the evils of practicing voodoo, which Coco gave up when she became a Christian. It's up to Coco to turn them to God, but lately talking to them is a lot like talking to a brick wall. Her grant funding for the conservation work she does with alligators in the bayou is up and if she doesn't get the next grant, how will she support her family? One of the Trahans, a powerful local family, threatens her family with eviction, claiming that Coco's late grandfather gambled away the family home long ago. Coco makes a call to ex-boyfriend Luc Trahan without thinking about the consequences to her heart. Then Coco finds a body in the clutches of one of her alligators, and finds herself under suspicion of the murder. Can she trust Luc, who broke her heart two years ago, to help her find the real murderer? Caroll has hit one out of the park with her debut novel. Best thing about this book: the characters. They are well-rounded, conflict-filled, and real. And Caroll doesn't hold anything back - each character takes the reader along for an emotional journey. Second best thing about this book: the unusual setting. The bayou and southern feel created by Caroll draw the reader into the story, while her carefully crafted descriptions don't overwhelm with bulky paragraphs of text. I can't wait for the next book in this series! |
