Henry thought his feelings for Marie had faded long ago, but seeing her again brings a spark of attraction alive. When Marie returns to Sommerfeld, he finds ways to help Marie and her daughter, secretly hoping that Marie will return his feelings. When a series of thefts takes place and the two “outsiders” are blamed, can Henry prove their innocence? Or has Marie pulled the wool over his eyes as well? Will his heart recover if she is found guilty of the thefts?
I have to admit that I was hesitant to start reading this novel. After reading some of Beverly Lewis’ novels based on Amish/Mennonite characters and setting, I didn’t think anything else could measure up.
I WAS WRONG.
I was sucked in from the very first scene. Sawyer’s concise but powerful descriptions of the characters’ emotions made me feel as if I was right there with them, as did her detailed description of the Mennonite setting. I especially identified with Henry from the very beginning. Marie’s return to her faith and acceptance back into the community nearly brought me to tears, it was so real. And the romance between Henry and Marie – wow! Using actions consistent with the setting and characters, Sawyer managed to create some serious tension between these two.
I would consider the level of suspense in this book to be light. However, because of the setting based on a Mennonite community, it seemed to fit. Sawyer handled the emotion surrounding the thefts well, and showed how it affected the whole town.
Sawyer has created a masterpiece in this novel. There was not one thing I could complain about – except maybe the length of time before the next book comes out. This book is a must-read for those who enjoy a well-written romance with a little suspense thrown in for spice.
