Review – City of the dead

In the second book of the Seven Wonders Series, T.L. Higley shares the story of of Hemiunu, the Grand Vizier of Egypt. Set during the time of the pyramids, Hemiunu oversees the building of the current Pharoah’s own pyramid.

Hemiunu is a well-respected son of Egypt until a series of murders draws him under suspicion. The victims are some of those closest to him and circumstances certainly point the finger in his direction.

Hemiunu sets out to find the true killer, but finds that it will be even more difficult than he has believed. His investigation leads him to the mysterious and delightful Neferet. Hemi soon learns that Neferet is a member of a religious sect that worship only one god, whom they call the One True God. How can he trust a woman who believes such strange ideas … and can she help him solve the riddles surrounding the murders of his friends?

I loved the first book in this series, Shadow of Colossus, and this book didn’t disapopint. The story is intriguing and the setting unique. I enjoyed learning about what life may have been like during the time of the Pharoahs. It was interesting to read about the contrast between Christianity and the Egyptians belief in many gods, and to ponder what they must have thought about the ‘rebel’ religion at the time.

Higley is a wonderful writer and she’s really on to something good with this series set near the Seven Wonders of the World. I can’t wait for book three!
