Review – Demon’s Bluff

Demon’s Bluff, book two of the Renegade Spirit series, finds Patrick “Patch” Johnson in a remote sleepy town of Nevada after his narrow escape from the control of wicked Cheryl McCry, a leader in the World Peace Alliance. Laura, a spy for the TR gang, but also an orderly from the New Peace Clinic, had secretly substituted sugar pills for Patch’s prescription sedatives during his imprisonment. She wanted him alert when they helped him escape. Afterward Laura drove him to meet Gary, gang leader for the Tattooed Rats, who had his own plans for Patch.

Patch had hoped to continue with the TR gang like before he went to jail. But Gary wanted Patch in a safer place, a small ranching community he’d found up north. He told Patch he not only needed to recuperate from his battle with the demon Trevor, but he needed to stay hidden from the World Peace Alliance and Cheryl McCry in particular. McCry had just announced a hefty reward for Patch’s capture which would tempt even his friends to turn him in. Patch reluctantly agreed.

When Gary dropped Patch off in front of the white-steeple church in Demon’s Bluff, the town looked like a small town out of the 1950′s. Even the drugstore advertised “extra-thick” malts on their old-fashioned plate glass windows.

But the town was far from normal and it wasn’t safe. Patch soon learned about the town legend of a battle between angels and demons fought in the skies over Demon’s Bluff too long ago for anyone to remember. Although no one knew for sure, townspeople now based their annual Spirit Festival on the legend. The Spirit Fest drew everyone from psychics to the superficially spiritual and enlightened, to those who were just curious. The festival had become the towns leading money maker. But no one knew of the horrific surprise waiting in the lightening laced thunderhead clouds overhead.

This fast-paced series is for young adults, or those who are young at heart. Jenkins and Perrodin skillfully weave the theme of prayer with spiritual warfare, action packed scenes and a rising tension that keeps the reader flipping the pages. Brief character sketches of-”the Kids” and “the Adults”-are provided in the prologue. Chapter one brings the reader current from where book one ended. Seclusion Point: Renegade Spirit Series, volume #3 released in 2008 to complete this remarkable series. Where Patch, still in hiding, learns Cheryl McCry’s dangerous secret, knowledge that may cost Patch his life. Don’t miss the suspense filled surprise conclusion.
