Review – The Lightkeeper’s Daughter

Addie Sullivan, The Lightkeeper’s Daughter, is shocked when a man arrives at her home and claims to be her uncle. He goes on to say that the people she has known as her parents are not really her parents. They took her in when she was shipwrecked with her real mother who died in the accident. Addie also learns that her real father has been told she died in the shipwreck and that someone has been paying for her upkeep all these years. The very someone who wants to keep her from reuniting with her family.

With her uncle’s help, Addie goes to live at her father’s estate under the guise of governess for her nephew Edward. They will keep her real identity a secret until they can discover who has paid to care for her and kept her from her real family. As Addie spends time with the family, a romance develops between her and the father of her charge and together, they work at solving the mystery surrounding her past. A mystery that takes many unexpected twists and turns before the final resolution.

I’m not much of a historical reader, so imagine my surprise when I enjoyed reading The Lightkeeper’s Daughter. I especially liked the main character Addie who speaks whatever comes to mind and always tells the truth. A refreshing trait for someone with as pure of a mind as Addie and a real joy to see how those around her reacted to her comments.

In addition to her personality, Addie’s love of the Lord was evident in everything she did. So evident it impacted those around her, encouraging them to grow stronger in their faith walk. The spiritual message never felt heavy handed, but was as much a part of Addie as her breathing.

Not only is characterization and the faith element strong, but the mystery is filled with twists and turns that will keep you reading. Things heat up in the last third of the book and author Coble races to the finish not allowing you to put down The Lightkeeper’s Daughter until the more than satisfying ending.
