Jordyn Redwood Interview

February 5, 2013 By The Suspense Zone

Jordyn RedwoodQ: How long have you been writing and what other careers or jobs have you had?

A. I’ve been writing a long time but didn’t truly focus on finishing a novel until 2009. Currently, I’m still nursing in the pediatric ER. I’ve also been a golf caddy, a cashier at a hardware store and a resident assistant in college.

Q: Do you write in only one genre and if so which one and why? If not, which ones and why?

A: I stick to suspense. It’s what I love to read and write. I love the adrenaline rush of the ER and want my readers to experience that type of feeling when reading my books.

Q: How does your faith play into your writing?

A. I think being a Christian reaches into all areas of my life so naturally it would come out in my writing as well. I want readers who are Christians to feel affirmed in their faith and readers who don’t know Christ to understand the nature of His sacrificial love for us. The challenge becomes having those tones come authentically from the characters and their journey and not have the reader feel you’ve just opened up a Bible and started reading it to them.

Q: How do you choose your settings for your books?

A. My first series was based in Colorado which is where I live. I guess I love the state so much I wanted to highlight it. Who knows what I’ll do next time. Maybe a sleepy little town in Maine. Wait, that’s what Stephen King does, right? Better not copy a master.

Q: Do you base your characters on people you know or are they totally made up?

A: Honestly, some of my characters are a fusion of several people I’ve known personally over the years. Others are completely made up. The fun is getting calls from people I know who ask—is that me? Most often they are identifying with a character that has nothing to do with them.

Q: Would you tell us about your current book release Poison?

Poison by Jordyn Redwood

A: Poison takes place five years after the Chapter 2 hostage incident in Proof. What everyone thought was an hallucination named Lucent who convinced a father to murder half is family is now alive and real and may have kidnapped Raven—one of the few survivors of that fateful day. It’s up to Raven’s estranged half-sister, Keelyn Blake, to find her and figure out why those who responded to the crisis are now dying.

Q: Where did you get your inspiration for Poison?

A: It was inspired by a patient experience I had—and that’s about all I can say.

Q: What is the main thing you hope readers remember from this story?

A: The consequences of hiding the truth.

Q: Tell us what you like about the main characters of this book.

A: I love Keelyn Blake. She’s a body language expert and I did a lot of research into reading body language for her character. Those scenes were some of my most favorite to write. Keelyn’s been through a lot of tragedy and has come through it a stronger woman. Lee Watson was the SWAT commander during the hostage situation and is hiding a big secret from Keelyn to whom he is now engaged. I’ve teamed him up with Nathan Long who was the negotiator from the inciting event—the hostage crisis. Let’s just say Lee and Nathan don’t agree on a lot which makes great tension for the novel.

Q: Would you share with us what you are working on now?

A. I’ve just finished Peril which is the third and last novel of the Bloodline Trilogy. I’m getting ready to write a new book proposal.  Anyone know any great medical mysteries?

Q: If money were no object what vacation would you like to take and why?

A. I’ve always wanted to travel to Italy and get into the secret Vatican archives. Just what is in there?!?

Q: What is the silliest thing you have ever done?

A. Oh my. There are many. I tried scuba diving in the ocean without ever having taken a class. That was silly and stupid. I hated the feeling of being pulled under water by the weights. Let’s just say the experience didn’t last very long.

Q: What is the hardest thing you have ever done?

A. Helping to tell families their loved one has died.

Q: Where can readers find you on the internet?

A.They can find me at www.jordynredwood.net and www.redwoodsmedicaledge.com.

Q: Anything else you’d like to tell or share with us?

A. Thanks so much for hosting me, Susan. It’s been great being here!
