Lillian Duncan Interview

September 30, 2019 By The Suspense Zone

Q: Let me start with asking you to tell us a little bit about yourself.

A. I’m 64, happily married, and live in a small town in Ohio. I worked as a school speech pathologist for 34 years. Most of those years were in a large urban school district where I mostly worked with deaf and hard-of-hearing students.

Q: When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?
A. I didn’t start writing until I was 40, but I always loved books. One day I was reading a book called SIMPLE ABUNDANCE. It was talking about God-given dreams. It was like a light bulb went off in my head. I knew I was supposed to be writing all the “daydreams” and turning them into books.

Q: Do you find certain themes reoccurring in your books? If so, what are they and why? If not, what is the theme in your current release?
A. Forgiveness seems to be a recurrent theme in many of my stories. But another theme seems to be emerging which is how crucial God’s Word is to all of our life journeys. In 2012 I was diagnosed with bilateral brain tumors that have affected my health. But God’s Word gives me the wisdom and the strength I need to have peace and joy in spite of my struggles. I want other people to know that God doesn’t leave us alone in our battles, he’s given us His Word so that we can be victorious in spite of our circumstances.

Q: Would you tell us about your current book release TRAPPED?
A: TRAPPED is a definite page turner. Angelina Matthews has it all—riches; fame; and beauty. Her life is perfect until the day she’s kidnapped and trapped in a basement with a mad man! But that’s just where the story starts. To get to the ending, you’ll go on a journey with more twists and turns than you can imagine.

Q: Where did the idea for this story come from?
A. Sometimes, I have an idea in mind when I start a book, but not in this case. I had one scene stuck in my brain. A woman walking through a dark parking lot and hearing footsteps, but every time she looked around no one was there.
It was up to me to discover who this woman was, why she was in the dark parking lot and why she could hear footsteps without anyone being around.

Q: Who/what has influenced your writing career the most?
A. All the books and the writers who wrote them that I’ve read during my life. To me writers are like rock stars.

Q: Would you share with us what you are working on now?
A. I’m participating in my publisher’s Christmas Extravaganza with a novella entitled ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS IS JOHNNY ROCKER DEAD! This is a fun book but with lots of suspense as well. I have another book that should release some time next year—JANE DOE. It’s filled with lots of action and a little romance—my favorite type of book to read or write! Along with that I’m also working on the third Puzzle House novel—SUFFER THE LITTLE CHILDREN.

Q: If you were a dessert, what would it be and why?
A. OH! Without a doubt a birthday cake. I love cakes of all sorts but really love birthday cake. I’ve even been known to buy one for absolutely no reason.

Q: Is there something about you most people wouldn’t know?
A. In 2012, I was diagnosed with bilateral brain tumors as a result of a rare genetic disease—Neurofibromatosis Type 2. It’s affected both my hearing and my balance. I actually was a speech pathologist for deaf/hard-of-hearing children and now my hearing is as bad as many of them.

Q: Is there a place you have always wanted to visit? A vacation spot, historical monument, overseas, etc?
A. My husband and I had planned a trip to Europe several years ago but had to cancel because I needed treatment for the brain tumors. I’ve been to Europe before, but I’d really like to go back again.
