Gail Gaymer Martin Interview

December 7, 2020 By The Suspense Zone

Q: Let me start with asking you to tell us a little bit about yourself.
A. I was born in Michigan and lived there all of my life until 4 years ago when we moved to Sedona, Arizona where we had rented a house for three winter months. I grew up an avid reader, and I loved poetry and started writing it when I was in the 3rd grade.

Q: When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?
A. I loved Nancy Drew stories and about age 10 I decided to write my own series about a young girl who solved mysteries. As I aged, writing had gotten into my blood, I wrote for children’s magazines, and with a counseling background, I wrote articles for both parents and teenage magazines, but I soon realized writing fiction was my goal.

Q: Could you give us the highlights of your professional writing career including how you got your first writing break?
A. As a teenager, I was asked to write articles about our school activities for a local newspaper. Shortly after, a county newspaper saw my articles, and I was hired by them to write about our school activities and student successes. That led me to writing for children, teens and parents magazines, and I had found a market. I also was hired to write short stories for children’s magazines. All of this led to my love of writing fiction.

Q: Would you tell us about your current book release See Jane Run?
A: I love suspense and though I wrote mainly romances, I decided to try a romantic suspense. I wrote a few books in that genre, but this release was one that I loved.

Q: Where did you get your inspiration for See Jane Run?
A: Somewhere, I saw the old grade school primer based on Dick and Jane. As I looked through the pages, I saw the line See Dick Run. See Jane Run, and the idea struck me when I asked the question why was Jane running? That gave me the idea of a stalker.

Q: What is the main thing you hope readers remember from this story?
A: The story is filled with excitement and suspense so I would hope readers would recall that, but as far as a real lesson. We are God’s children and He is with us so we can put our fears into His hands. That is a message we can cling too.

Q: What inspires you to write?
A. Sometimes I’m stimulated by a newspaper article or TV news, sometimes an experience I had or an experience someone told me about. Usually I have a romance or suspense idea in my mind and I’m excited to begin that book.

Q: Would you share with us what you are working on now?
A. Dream of Me is a romance about a woman who opens her home to her brother whose marriage is on the rocks. His friend who helps him move irritates the sister with his sarcasm which he thinks is humor, yet she finds him interesting and attractive.

Q: When you’re not writing what do you like to do?
A. I’ve always loved reading so that’s what I do, and I am active in church where I serve on the worship committee, sing in the choir and sing solos.
