Ray Quinn, ex-cop turned private investigator is back in The Corruptible by Mark Mynheir. We first met Ray, his trusty sidekick Crevis and friend Pam in the first book in the Night Watchman series, appropriately called The Night Watchman.
The Corruptible finds Ray and Crevis teamed up in the newly formed Night Watchman agency and accepting a case from a wealthy high profile client. A former cop has stolen valuable information from this client and he needs Ray to track down the information before it’s leaked to the public.
Easy case for Ray, right? Sure, until he finds the former cop murdered and he must team up with the Orlando Police Department to solve the murder in order to find the hard drive containing the missing information. This leads Ray down a path filled with twists right up to the end of the book.
After I finished reading The Night Watchman, I lamented not knowing if I’d ever see another Ray Quinn book. When I heard author Mark Mynheir was writing a sequel I couldn’t wait for the book to release. And my wait was well worth it as The Corruptible is just as enjoyable and engaging as The Night Watchman.
The real draws to both of the Night Watchman books are Ray Quinn’s character, author Mynheir’s fresh creative writing, and his inside knowledge into police procedurals.
Quinn is a sarcastic, humorous, jaded ex-cop and Mynheir nails the character traits while still making Quinn likeable by revealing his vulnerability.
The insiders look at police work was expanded in this book with Ray’s partnership with the Orlando Police Department and added even more credibility to Ray’s character. Then there’s the writing. Fresh, new, different. Something I, as a writer, can appreciate and enjoy.
This is a book I read in one day, unable to put it down. I highly recommend The Corruptible and encourage all mystery readers to run out and purchase the book.
