Lost Lake

Review – With Every Breath

March 4, 2019 By The Suspense Zone

From the back cover:

In the shadow of the nation’s capital, Kate Livingston’s respectable life as a government worker is disrupted by an encounter with the insufferable Trevor McDonough, the one man she’d hoped never to see again. A Harvard-trained physician, Trevor never showed the tiniest flicker of interest in Kate, and business is the only reason he has sought her out now.

Despite her misgivings, Kate agrees to Trevor’s risky proposal to join him in his work to find a cure for tuberculosis. As Kate begins to unlock the mysteries of Trevor’s past, his hidden depths fascinate her. However, a shadowy enemy lies in wait and Trevor’s closely guarded secrets are darker than she ever suspected.

As revelations from the past threaten to destroy their careers, their dreams, and even their lives, Trevor and Kate find themselves in a painfully impossible situation. With everything to lose, they must find the strength to trust that hope and love can prevail over all.

My thoughts:

WITH EVERY BREATH is an older book by Ms. Camden. Trevor and Kate are polar opposites and their rivalry reminds me of Anne of Green Gables and Gilbert Blythe. Both super smart and determined to succeed. But that is where the similarity ends. Trevor is a super-intelligent medical genius who does care deeply for people, but he has zero bed-side manner and appears cold and calculating. Kate, on the other hand, is equally intelligent in areas (such as mathematics) where Trevor isn’t, but unlike him she puts her heart into her relationships and thrives on intimate relationships with family and friends.

Kate may be a bit outspoken for women in 1862, I don’t know if she is or not, but most women in novels set in that time period are more docile, even if they are portrayed as tomboys, masquerading as men or other unfeminine activities. While Kate is very feminine she does have a brain and she wasn’t afraid to use it.

If you like historical romance you might want to read WITH EVERY BREATH. While it is set around the awful (and not at all romantic) illness of tuberculosis and at times gets more detailed than I liked as a reader, there is a suspense woven in that causes these characters to fight through a painfully impossible situation for their lives, and careers.
