Review – The Breath of Dawn

January 7, 2013 By The Suspense Zone

Morgan Spencer is a Corporate turnaround specialist, aka “the success guru” and has a Midas touch in business. But losing his beloved wife, Jill, soon after the death of their daughter, he goes over the edge. All Morgan has left is his daughter, Livie. He goes to live with his brother, Rick, and his wife, Noelle, hoping for time to recover. But two years later, he’s still grieving.

Quinn Reilly disappeared after she put a man in jail. Now, he’s getting out, and swearing to make her pay. Quinn sells things online, and has recently acquired a house full of contents to dispose of. The house—oddly enough—is built on an asylum that had never been cleared out adding a creepiness to the job.

When Morgan buys the house, he meets the energetic Quinn and despite himself is attracted. But then the threats against her life begins. What will it take for her to survive long enough for them to build a future?

The Breath of Dawn is a kind of prologue to Ms. Heitzmann’s other romantic suspense books, A Rush of Wings and In the Still of Night. I didn’t realize this at first, and I kept feeling I knew Morgan, Jill, Noelle, and Rick, but I couldn’t figure out why until I looked back at Ms. Heitzmann’s previous books. I enjoyed getting reconnected with these characters and finding out how their lives changed since I read about them prior.

The Breath of Dawn started out kind of slow and kind of sad, but by the second chapter my interest was piqued. I had an idea how things might play out, and in some ways, it did as I predicted, and in other ways there were some surprises. I did enjoy The Breath of Dawn a lot and I recommend it, but I think you will want to read A Rush of Wings and In the Still of Night first to fill in the characters histories. Recommended.
