D.L. Wood Interview

January 27, 2020 By The Suspense Zone

Q: How did you get your start writing fiction and what genre do you predominantly write in?
A. I started writing because I love stories and wanted to be a part of creating them. I write suspense laced with romance and faith.

Q: What part of a writing career do you find most difficult?
A. The marketing, definitely! The work that must be done to make sure that your books get out in the world is often as consuming as the writing itself, and not nearly as fun.

Q: Would you tell us about your current book release A Criminal Game?
A: A Criminal Game is a suspense novel about a single mother in New York City, working as a night manager at a luxury hotel, trying to keep it all together. When a high-stakes poker game at the hotel goes south, and all evidence points to her as the culprit, she has only hours to set the record straight, with the lives of those she loves hanging in the balance. And, of course, she has to decide who to trust—the charming poker player who seems to like her as much as the game, or the hotel driver who harbors unspoken feelings.

Q: What did you enjoy most about writing this book? Least?
A: I loved researching the different areas of New York and weaving in my perceptions of the city from my own travels there. The toughest thing was writing a story that takes place over only twelve hours. It was much more challenging than I anticipated!

Q: What is the main theme or spiritual message of this book?
A: I would say trusting God even when things don’t seem right or fair, or when they don’t make sense—trust over fear, and not seeking to use “control” to overcome your fear.

Q: What does your writing space look like?
A: My favorite writing space is in our upstairs spare room. It’s quiet and takes me out of the thick of things.

Q: Would you share with us what you are working on now?
A. Absolutely! I am finishing another suspense novel laced with romance and faith that will hopefully be released in just a couple of months. It involves an previously solved murder that is unexpectedly revisited when new evidence surfaces upon the main character’s return to her hometown for her ten-year high school reunion.

Q: If you could have dinner with 2 people, who would they be?
A. My grandparents. I miss them more than I can say.

Q: Do you have a favorite hobby?
A. Music –I love singing with the worship band at my church.

Q: What is the most rewarding thing you have ever done?
A. That’s such a tough one, because, obviously, we all have so many things that we have found rewarding in our lives. But, raising my twin girls ranks way up there. Now if I could just get them to pick up their dishes….
